# ClickHouse
There are 2 sources that provide integration with ClickHouse

<table>
<tr><td>Source Module</td><td>Documentation</td></tr><tr>
<td>

`clickhouse`

</td>
<td>

Source that extracts tables, views, and dictionaries from ClickHouse via SQLAlchemy.

Implementation notes:
- Extends TwoTierSQLAlchemySource (database.table hierarchy)
- Optionally parses system.query_log for usage and lineage
- Supports ClickHouse-specific objects (dictionaries, materialized views)
- Some column types not fully supported (*AggregateFunction, DateTime with timezone)
 [Read more...](#module-clickhouse)

</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>

`clickhouse-usage`

</td>
<td>

Source that extracts usage statistics from ClickHouse by analyzing system.query_log.

Implementation notes:
- Queries system.query_log (or custom view via query_log_table config) for SELECT queries
- Feeds each query into a SqlParsingAggregator as an observed query, so usage is
  computed through the same SQL-parsing path as the rest of the ClickHouse connector
  family (see the aggregator-based path in sql/clickhouse.py)
- The aggregator produces DatasetUsageStatistics (buckets, top users/queries) with
  generate_usage_statistics=True

This remains a standalone source (rather than folding into sql/clickhouse.py) to preserve
the existing `clickhouse-usage` recipe entry point; it now delegates aggregation to the
shared aggregator instead of the legacy usage_common GenericAggregatedDataset.

## Overview

ClickHouse is a data platform used to store and query analytical or operational data. Learn more in the [official ClickHouse documentation](https://clickhouse.com/).

The DataHub integration for ClickHouse covers core metadata entities such as datasets/tables/views, schema fields, and containers. It also captures table- and column-level lineage, usage statistics, data profiling, and stateful deletion detection.

## Concept Mapping

While the specific concept mapping is still pending, this shows the generic concept mapping in DataHub.

### Overview

The `clickhouse` module ingests metadata from Clickhouse into DataHub. It is intended for production ingestion workflows and module-specific capabilities are documented below.

### Prerequisites

Before running ingestion, ensure the DataHub host can reach the ClickHouse endpoint (HTTP `8123` / `8443`, or native `9000` / `9440`) and that you have a dedicated ClickHouse user for DataHub.

These grants assume ClickHouse's SQL-driven access control is enabled (the default on ClickHouse Cloud and on modern self-hosted installs — corresponds to `access_management = 1` on the user profile). Under that model, `system.tables`, `system.columns`, and `system.databases` return only rows for objects the user has some privilege on.

`GRANT SELECT ON <database>.*` grants read access to the actual table data. Asset and structural-lineage extraction themselves only read ClickHouse metadata (`system.tables` / `system.columns` / view definitions). Profiling is the capability that runs live `SELECT`s against your tables.

| Capability                               | Required grants                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      |
| ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Assets (tables, views, schemas, columns) | Some privilege on each database you want to ingest, so those objects appear in `system.tables` / `system.columns`. Prefer metadata-only grants when you do not need profiling: `GRANT SHOW TABLES, SHOW COLUMNS ON <database>.* TO datahub`. `GRANT SELECT ON <database>.* TO datahub` also works (and is required for profiling), but it does grant read access to the underlying data. Explicit `GRANT SELECT ON system.tables TO datahub` and `GRANT SELECT ON system.columns TO datahub` are recommended as belt-and-suspenders. |
| Structural lineage (views, MVs, dicts) | Covered by the asset grants above — lineage for `View`, `MaterializedView`, `Distributed`, and `Dictionary` engines is derived from `system.tables.create_table_query` / `engine_full`, not from reading table rows. |
| Query-log lineage and usage statistics | `GRANT SELECT ON system.query_log TO datahub` (or on your custom view if you set `query_log_table`). Strictly required — without it the query-log fetch fails loudly. Enable via `include_query_log_lineage: true` and/or `include_usage_statistics: true`. No `SELECT` on user databases is needed for this path. |
| Table- and column-level profiling | `GRANT SELECT ON <database>.* TO datahub` for every database you want to profile — profiling runs live `SELECT` queries against the target tables and therefore needs read access to the actual data. |

Minimum grants for the full set of capabilities (assets + lineage + usage + profiling):

```sql
CREATE USER datahub IDENTIFIED WITH sha256_password BY '<password>';
-- Strictly required for query-log lineage and usage statistics.
GRANT SELECT ON system.query_log TO datahub;
-- Recommended (belt-and-suspenders — object-level grants below already
-- make these tables visible via ClickHouse's access model, but explicit
-- grants make the intent clear).
GRANT SELECT ON system.tables  TO datahub;
GRANT SELECT ON system.columns TO datahub;
-- Metadata visibility for asset / structural-lineage ingestion.
-- Prefer SHOW when you do not need profiling (no data read).
GRANT SHOW TABLES, SHOW COLUMNS ON <database>.* TO datahub;
-- Required only when profiling is enabled (grants read access to data).
-- Repeat per database you want to profile.
GRANT SELECT ON <database>.* TO datahub;
```

If you enable profiling, `SELECT` alone is enough for both visibility and profiling — you can omit the separate `SHOW TABLES, SHOW COLUMNS` grant.

Notes:

- `SHOW DATABASES` does not need to be granted separately when the grants above are present.
- No write privileges (`INSERT`, `ALTER`, `CREATE`) are required.
- If you route lineage/usage through a custom query-log view (e.g. for a cluster where you union `clusterAllReplicas('cluster', system.query_log)` into a view), grant `SELECT` on that view instead of `system.query_log` and set `query_log_table` in the recipe.
- ClickHouse Cloud uses the same GRANT syntax; run the statements as a user with `GRANT OPTION` on the target objects.

Under AUTOCOMMIT or READ_COMMITTED, metrics come from different snapshots, so a profile can be internally inconsistent on a concurrently-written table (e.g. uniqueCount > rowCount). On MySQL InnoDB, REPEATABLE_READ keeps a consistent snapshot; on Postgres, READ COMMITTED already takes a fresh snapshot per statement, so AUTOCOMMIT loses no consistency there.",

### Capabilities

Use the **Important Capabilities** table above as the source of truth for supported features and whether additional configuration is required.

#### Query Log Extraction

Enable query-log based metadata extraction to augment definition-based lineage:

- `include_query_log_lineage`: derive lineage from INSERT/CREATE queries in `system.query_log`
- `include_usage_statistics`: derive usage statistics from SELECT query activity

This complements view/materialized-view lineage and improves operational usage visibility.

### Limitations

Module behavior is constrained by source APIs, permissions, and metadata exposed by the platform. Refer to capability notes for unsupported or conditional features.

### Troubleshooting

If ingestion fails, validate credentials, permissions, connectivity, and scope filters first. Then review ingestion logs for source-specific errors and adjust configuration accordingly.

### Important Capabilities
| Capability | Status | Notes |
| ---------- | ------ | ----- |
| [Data Profiling](../../../../metadata-ingestion/docs/dev_guides/sql_profiles.md) | ✅ | Optionally enabled via configuration. |
| Dataset Usage | ✅ | Enabled by default to get usage stats. |
| [Detect Deleted Entities](../../../../metadata-ingestion/docs/dev_guides/stateful.md#stale-entity-removal) | ✅ | Enabled by default via stateful ingestion. |

### Overview

The `clickhouse-usage` module ingests metadata from Clickhouse into DataHub. It is intended for production ingestion workflows and module-specific capabilities are documented below.

This plugin has the below functionalities:

- For a specific dataset this plugin ingests the following statistics -
  - top n queries.
  - top users.
  - usage of each column in the dataset.
- Aggregation of these statistics into buckets, by day or hour granularity.
- Usage information is computed by querying the `system.query_log` table. In case you have a cluster or need to apply additional
  transformation/filters you can create a view and put to the `query_log_table` setting.

### Prerequisites

Before running ingestion, ensure the DataHub host can reach the ClickHouse endpoint (HTTP `8123` / `8443`, or native `9000` / `9440`) and that the DataHub user has read access to the query-log source. These grants assume ClickHouse's SQL-driven access control is enabled (`access_management = 1`).

| Capability                 | Required grants                                                                                                                                               |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Usage statistics (default) | `GRANT SELECT ON system.query_log TO datahub` (or on the custom view referenced by `query_log_table`). Strictly required — the fetch fails loudly without it. |

This module does **not** need `SELECT` (or any other privilege) on your user databases. It only reads query text from the query log and runs SQL parsing locally; schema enrichment, when available, comes from the DataHub graph rather than from live reads against ClickHouse tables. Use the main `clickhouse` source (with profiling enabled) when you need table/column profiling.

Example:

```sql
CREATE USER datahub IDENTIFIED WITH sha256_password BY '<password>';
GRANT SELECT ON system.query_log TO datahub;
```

If your query log lives in a custom view (for example on a clustered deployment where you wrap `clusterAllReplicas('cluster', system.query_log)` in a view), grant `SELECT` on that view instead of `system.query_log` and set `query_log_table` in the recipe. No write privileges are required.

### Install the Plugin
```shell
pip install 'acryl-datahub[clickhouse-usage]'
```

### Starter Recipe
Check out the following recipe to get started with ingestion! See [below](#config-details) for full configuration options.

For general pointers on writing and running a recipe, see our [main recipe guide](../../../../metadata-ingestion/README.md#recipes).
```yaml
source:
  type: clickhouse-usage
  config:
    # Coordinates
    host_port: db_host:port
    platform_instance: dev_cluster
    email_domain: acryl.io
    # Credentials
    username: username
    password: "password"
sink:
# sink configs
```

#### Usage Extraction Scope

The `clickhouse-usage` module focuses on usage extraction from query logs. Use it when you only need usage telemetry without full schema/lineage extraction from the main `clickhouse` module.
